Our rescues, Max and Josie, worked out a really neat deal! They secretly, without TXOESR knowledge, contacted these two ladies in MO, who are good friends, live close to each other, and see each other often. Max and Josie whispered and whined that they needed to stay together, and told them if they adopted them, they would be REALLY good dawgs (mmmmm) and love them forever. Their whispers were heard. Barb and Deb are now owned by a couple of internet-expert, whiney rescue sheepers. Keep tuned for email updates from the new ownees, if Josie and Max allow them puter time.

Barb wrote: Well, Deb and I have been well and thoroughly adopted. Friday thanks to all the hard work by Suzy, our babies arrived at the TWA Cargo in St Louis, which is all of five minutes from my house. In spite of the terrible treatment Suzy received from TWA cargo in Dallas who did not want to ship our dogs, at St. Louis there were at least 6 TWA employees doing all they could to help us with the dogs, petting, telling where there was grass for walkies, making sure we had water for them, breaking down the crates for re shipment and lots of petting and " Oh, aren't they beautiful". Deb and I and our good friend Chris, from Golden Retriever Rescue brought everything we could think of, including Chris' digital camera to record the events. As soon as the paperwork was finished and the return of the crates arranged we departed for my house with one dog in each car. Josie loves to go for rides. Max is not too happy about getting in the car, but Deb reports that is improving after several rides this week. After an hour or so of aren't they wonderful and more pictures, Deb took Max to her park, about 70 miles west of St. Louis, and I put Josie in her crate, set up right next to my favorite recliner, and went back to work. The next day, Saturday, both dogs went to their new vets, got Heartgard and Advantage or Frontline and a quick check over. Josie was fine except for needing her stitches out in a week. Max had mites in one ear but the vet prescribed something to take care of that. Josie's ears were a little irritated and my vet gave me some Panalog to put in them, but she really does not want anyone messing with her ears. She also does not like to have her face groomed but we are working on that. After we visited our vet, Josie and I got in the car and drove to Deb's where there was a great reunion and much playing in Deb's yard. Josie has a habit of holding on to one of Max's ears but he seems to put up with it. We stayed overnight and then came home the next afternoon. Josie and I both fell asleep as soon as we got home. With Deb this close the dogs will be back and forth on a regular basis. We did learn some things about the dogs that day. Max likes to eat plastic, including a step stool Deb has in her front room and later on a phone cord. Neither are really familiar with stuffed toys, but we are working on that. We both have a big box of dog toys to practice with. Both dogs get really upset if you take them by the collar and try to pull them forward (as in encouraging them into the crate). I found out very quickly that if I just told Josie to go in, she popped right in. Deb had to work a bit harder with Max, but a judicious bribe or two of little dog bones did the trick. Josie is pretty good on leash. She doesn't pull me off my feet when she wants to go the other direction which for an untrained sheepie is as good as it gets. We are both working on sit, down and off. Off is the big one right away because both dogs jump up on anything that catches their interest. They are both very smart and it won't take long to learn these important new words. Josie comes when called, inside or outside, but I don't know if she knows her name or is just thrilled that anyone is talking to her. She is a bit nervous of my huge back yard, but is learning that it is okay to go all the way to the back fence and to talk to the Deb's next door. The biggest success story was Josie and my cat Cinnamon who is 14 years old and the king of the roost. Cinnamon had been my last sheepdog, Bear's, cat, and is used to other dogs, but threatens them with being skinned alive if they get too close or friendly. He has decided that Josie is going to be okay, and doesn't hiss or back off and they have been both sleeping on my bed at the same time. I can't explain it unless it is that Josie is also a female sheepdog, or that Josie really likes cats (which seems to be true). Whatever the explanation, I am thankful, because I was worried about introducing the two in case they didn't get along. They have been here a week and a day and Deb and I agreed last night, that we have been really blessed in getting such great dogs. Thank you all again for all the help in saving these two and sending them to us. I will send you more updates as time goes on. Barb |
